Some days, some weeks, some years I feel like I’m floating through a warp, almost like we’re slipping back in time. This past week was certainly a distorted one.
I spent Tuesday afternoon glazing an army of women. Another quiet afternoon was whiled away wandering The Morgan Library & Museum (which felt extra special after reading The Personal Librarian). In a stunning room with hidden staircases secretly tucked behind three levels of books, this writing from 1868 stopped me in my tracks, and not just because of the graceful penmanship.
Charles Calistus Burleigh, an American abolitionist, was calling Americans to action. “The abolition of slavery is a victory, he states, but also the catalyst for future battles to expand enfranchisement, secure women’s rights, and pursue equality before the law for all.” My heart ached a little deeper at the progress made and the progress lost, that Burleigh’s words still feel so painfully relevant after 154 years.
These issues are layered and heartbreaking and scary and I’m not quite sure what to do, to be honest. So while I process and research and find ways to get involved, I’ll start with speaking through my art. I’ll use my pottery for action.
This week I’m auctioning off two meaningful pieces of my work to benefit the Midwest Access Coalition, an organization that supports people in the Midwest (where I’m from) in accessing safe, legal abortions with support in travel coordination and costs, lodging, food, medicine, and emotional support.
I hope you’ll join me, details here:
New Spring pieces in my webshop! Sweet white boob match holders, pretty boob mugs, and the ever important VOTE mug in white. I also introduced the elegant white chelsea vase this past week <3
I moved my entire studio out of my home and into my shared studio space near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. I’m keeping my home studio set up for personal creative projects, and I can’t wait to dive into other mediums with no attachment to outcome. I’m thinking of attempting a paper mache mirror frame this month!
