On Wednesday morning, I set up a table in my living room and started pinching some clay, not quite sure what my fingers would create. Letting my fingers do their work without much thought is the kind of magic I live for. They created a sculptural vase, similar to the first piece I ever made for my Mindful Pottery Subscription. Then, they made another one. I cuddled them up safely under a piece of plastic to slowly dry and went about my day. Later, I checked in on them huddled together and their sibling nature struck me. They were created from the same source: the same clay, the same hands, the same water smoothing their curves. They felt so alike but with distinct characteristics and personalities. One day, when they’re ready, they’ll go off to different places and hold different flowers and bring light to different homes. But they’ll always have their foundation.
It dawned on me that I am constantly creating a multitude of siblings out of clay. No two of my pieces should ever feel exactly the same, even in my more production based collections.
My work reflects our shared humanity, our relationships, our individuality supported in community.
