I write to you from the desert, where yesterday, I turned 33 among the saguaros. The past four winters, since my thirtieth year, I’ve celebrated my birthday with these majestic cacti. It feels fitting, spending my early thirties in the company of saguaro. They can take up to thirty-five years to grow strong and high enough to bloom for the first time, to be seen. They offer me a gentle reminder that I am still growing, still working toward a blooming of my own.
With the turn of a new year, for myself and us all, I encourage a moment of pause. Time to look at the weather out your window and acknowledge the shifting seasons. A moment to notice how your breath feels as it moves in and out of your lungs. A brief pause to consider an intention for the month ahead. If you’d like, go ahead and imagine a quality that you’d like to embody in the coming weeks - not what you’d like to do, but how you’d like to be. My intention is steady. I hope to practice steadiness in how I choose to spend my time, in how I move and care for my body, in my thoughts and in my actions.
May we all take a moment for reflection and intention.
May we all be blessed with a peaceful new year.
May my thirty-third year be my most magical yet.
